Research Interests

Tommaso Salzillo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Chemistry “Toso Montanari” at the University of Bologna. His research combines vibrational spectroscopy, crystal engineering, and solid-state chemistry to understand how molecular structure, crystal packing, and lattice dynamics govern the properties of functional materials.

Throughout his career, Tommaso has held research appointments at the University of Bologna, the Weizmann Institute of Science, and the Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona, where he studied polymorphism, charge transport in organic semiconductors, and the structural dynamics of molecular materials. His work has made extensive use of low-frequency Raman spectroscopy, terahertz spectroscopy, and advanced crystallographic methods to probe lattice vibrations and phase behavior.

His current research interests include polymorphism in molecular materials, solid-state photoreactions, electron-phonon coupling, low-frequency vibrational spectroscopy, and the structure–dynamics relationships that control the behavior of organic semiconductors and pharmaceutical solids.

Within the IRES CRYSTAL Dynamics Program, Tommaso mentors students conducting spectroscopy-based investigations of molecular crystals and dynamic materials at the University of Bologna.
