Research Interests
Paolo Pio Mazzeo is an Assistant Professor at the University of Parma whose research focuses on crystal engineering, crystallography, mechanochemistry, and advanced X-ray diffraction methods. His work combines the design and synthesis of functional crystalline materials with state-of-the-art structural characterization techniques.
A major theme of Paolo’s research is understanding how molecular solids respond dynamically to guest uptake, release, and external stimuli. His group studies cocrystals, metal-organic systems, crystalline sponges, and flexible porous materials using both single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction methods. He is also actively involved in the development of time-resolved in situ diffraction techniques for monitoring mechanochemical transformations using synchrotron radiation.
Paolo has authored more than sixty scientific publications and leads the PRIN-funded X4BEES project focused on crystal engineering for environmental sustainability. He is also deeply involved in crystallographic education and outreach activities throughout Europe.
Within the IRES CRYSTAL Dynamics Program, Paolo mentors students at the University of Parma in crystallography, crystal structure determination, and the characterization of dynamic molecular materials using advanced diffraction techniques.
